Want to find “great finds” at the thrift store but don’t know how to start? Follow some of these basic steps to find thrift store treasures.
Where to Shop
Location, Location, Location…. try to visit a trendy, well-kept thrift store in a good neighborhood. Normally you can find better merchandise in these areas.
Designer and Fabric….Look at some of your favorite clothes and check the designer tags. Look for similar designers and names you recognize like Calvin Klein, Ann Klein, BCBG, Liz Claiborne, etc. Designer items tend to last longer because of the fabric quality. Look for staple pieces like winter coats, jackets or blazers, bags, and business wear. These items are normally pretty expensive to begin with and well-kept pieces.
Dry Clean…Although most items in a thrift store have already been cleaned, taking them to a dry cleaners can help with minor alterations, tailoring, and/or loose buttons. This will also rid the item of any lingering odors (normally from being around other older items) and give you the “fresh from the store” feel.
Finally get past yourself!…If you have a phobia about wearing “someone else’s clothes” you will just throw your great buy in the back of the closet never to be seen again. Once you purchase any item, it is yours. You are also helping the environment by recycling fashion so you can pat yourself on the back for that.
Remember to Own it, Love it,Wear it, It’s Yours!
